Ecology of Aquatic Environments
Description
This module includes the study of a wide range of diverse aquatic habitats including oceans, coasts, estuaries, lakes, ponds, wetlands, rivers, and streams. Each ecosystem is explored to examine the community of associated living organisms, their physical and chemical environment, and how these are linked by flows of energy and nutrients. In addition, the integrating impacts and causes of global climatic changes and various environmental pollutants of concern in aquatic environments is discussed.
Learning Outcomes
Apply techniques and knowledge gained in prior learning to address multi-disciplinary ecological issues in aquatic environments and ecology.
Select and utilise sampling procedures and/or equipment appropriate to specific aquatic environments.
Undertake integrated field-based sampling projects, with cognisance and evaluation of the risks of working in hazardous environments.
Synthesise their understanding of the major processes that shape ecology in aquatic environments, and apply integrated solutions to ecological issues.
Demonstrate an awareness of the difficulties involved in tackling the complex issue of global change and of attributing (in whole or in part) the impacts to human activity
