Identification Skills for Biologists
Description
This module will provide the learners with the advanced identification skills and tools necessary for taxonomic proficiency in two groups of organisms. It will also develop skills in dissection techniques, interpretation of identification keys, and taxonomic designation that are transferrable between taxonomic groups.
Learning Outcomes
Identify aquatic organisms to species level
Demonstrate proficiency of identification techniques applicable to a chosen class/group of invertebrates, algal groups or marine mammals
Demonstrate understanding of the principles of taxonomy, systematics and classification
Create resources that can be used to aid in the identification of the specialist group e.g. species portfolios, identification keys
Apply acquired knowledge and skills in the context of appropriate assessment e.g. indices of ecosystem health
