Description
Students undertake internship in year 4 of the programme when they make their final preparations to transition from student psychiatric nurse to registered psychiatric nurse. This module aims to increase their capacity to understand their role as mental health practitioners in working effectively with diverse groups in society and recognising and responding to a wide range of mental health needs. It further aims to facilitate the students to develop the skills and knowledge required to contribute and participate fully in recovery orientated mental health service provision, clear in their understanding of their identity and the values inherent in mental health/psychiatric nursing practice.
Learning Outcomes
Critically analyse the challenge of complex needs and mental health and how we can support people living with such problems
Critically evaluate positive psychology and its contribution to recovery in mental health
Understand the wider context of public and government policy in making a case for challenging social exclusion and promoting social justice
Demonstrate in depth knowledge about trauma, trauma recovery and trauma informed care and the current evidence basis for this
Critically evaluate the role of spirituality in mental healthcare and critically discuss how the psychiatric nurse will incorporate this into his/her practice
Demonstrate awareness of issues in relation to choice and medication
Demonstrate understanding of the importance of sexuality and identity for mental well-being
Demonstrate ability to recognise indicators of abuse and demonstrate the skills necessary to respond appropriately and effectively
Have a deeper understanding of what mental health provision brings to tackling homelessness and understand the reasons for, and consequences of decision making in people living with homelessness and mental health problems
Embrace diversity and critically evaluate the opportunities and challenges for mental health psychiatric nursing practice and demonstrate the ability to develop and enhance the skills necessary to engage in nursing practice in diverse mental health care environments
