Bressie is guest speaker at GMIT SU Mental Health Seminar (11 Nov)

A seminar on mental health will take place in GMIT’s Dublin Road campus on Wednesday next, 11 November, at 7pm. TV personality, musician, triathlete and mental health advocate Niall Breslin, known to his legions of fans as Bressie, will be Guest of Honour speaking at the event.

A number of other well-known advocates of mental health will also address the seminar such as  Siobhéal Nic Eochaidh, former Dublin Rose and See Change Ambassador, Grace Mongey, fashion and make-up blogger, and  Kevin Russell, fitness guru.

GMIT Students’ Union Vice President for Welfare Amy Kelly says "Everyone is really looking forward to hearing what these speakers have to say. Students are keen to know and learn about mental health issues and will relate to people they look up to like these speakers. Mental Health is a huge issue with the student population around Ireland, with one in five experiencing a mental health problem. This seminar will show that these issues can happen to us all no matter how successful you may be.”

“The seminar will be very intimate, giving students the chance to ask questions to the panelists and hear about their experiences and how they overcame them. This event is one of many mental health promotion events the Students Union hopes to run over the course of this academic year.” 

The seminar will take place in room theatre 1000 and will be streamed live on the www.gmit.ie website.

GMIT Students Union has held a number of successful health promotion campaigns such as KISS Week and being awarded the first Amber Flag for promoting positive Mental Health in all five campuses. The SU rolled out a joint campaign in collaboration with NUIG Students’ Union called ‘Think before you take’, a Drugs Awareness campaign that aims to educate the students of Galway about the impact of a decision to take drugs. This campaign is being run yearlong in both colleges.

“This 2015/16 academic year, our plans include a brand new campaign called Body Reality, which will look at eating disorders and body image as it is a huge issue within colleges and among young people,” says Amy Kelly.
