Winning project aims to help transition towards a more environmentally-conscious construction sector

Staff in the GMIT Department of Building & Civil Engineering and BAM Ireland have scooped a major accolade, the third in recent weeks for the GMIT Department and industry partners, for its development of an innovative practical resource efficiency toolkit for the Irish construction sector.

The GMIT-BAM Ireland project was the national winner of the International ‘Energy Globe Award’, which was presented at Advantage Austria’s 50th anniversary ceremony in Dublin on 12 June.  Jan Gottsche, Environmental Coordinator for BAM Ireland (pictured) accepted the award on behalf of the GMIT-BAM Research Collaboration team. The GMIT-BAM Ireland research collaboration has won major recognition during 2017 with the following nominations:

Irish Education Awards 2017 – ‘Excellence in Education and Training’ category shortlist.

Irish Construction Awards 2017 – ‘Innovation in Construction’ category shortlist and ‘Business Collaboration’ category shortlist.

Irish Green Awards 2017 – ‘Sustainability Team of the Year’ and ‘Green Professional Services’ category shortlist.

The research collaboration, led by Dr Mark Kelly, Department of Building and Civil Engineering, GMIT, and Jan Gottsche of BAM Ireland, is exploring opportunities to implement resource efficiency initiatives during the tender bid preparation, pre-construction planning and construction phases.

“The main aim is to develop a practical resource efficiency toolkit for the Irish construction sector that will support and inform industry stakeholders who wish to reduce their energy use, water use and waste production during the construction phase of projects,” explains Dr Mark Kelly.

“We are delighted to receive this prestigious award. Our work together is ultimately to inform leaders in the sector on how to move towards a more environmentally-conscious construction sector. I would personally like to thank BAM Ireland for their continued cooperation and support over the past four years and to particularly note the significant contribution of BAM Ireland’s Environmental Coordinator, Jan Gottsche, who also happens to be a current Ph.D. student in the Department as well.”
