GMIT appoints acting head of Mayo Campus

GMIT has appointed Michael Gill from Kiltimagh as Acting Head of the Mayo campus. GMIT continues to accept applications for all CAO and Lifelong Learning programmes delivered in the Mayo campus

Speaking to staff in Castlebar today (Thursday 15 December 2016), during a week of presentations to staff, Dr Fergal Barry, President of GMIT, outlined the Institute’s  growing student population, planned developments,  improving financial position compared to 2015, and the Institute’s proactive engagement with the Higher Education Authority on securing the future sustainability of all GMIT campuses. Dr Barry wished Mr Gill well in his new role and thanked the former Head of campus, Dr Deirdre Garvey, who is returning to lecturing in January 2017.

The Acting Head of the Mayo campus, Mr Gill, will work with the GMIT Executive Board on developing a  Sustainable Strategy for the campus as part of an integrated GMIT.

Mr Gill says  “I am committed to the continued delivery of Higher Education in the west of Ireland. We are continuing to accept applications for our CAO and Lifelong Learning courses in the Mayo campus. We are having an open evening on all of our programmes, full-time and part-time, on Tuesday 10 January 2017 from 7 to 9pm, and we invite you to come along and talk with our staff and students and tour our campus. About Michael Gill:

Michael Gill is a native of Kiltimagh, Co Mayo, and now lives in Swinford. He was educated at St Louis Community School in Kiltimagh and completed a B. Comm in the National University of Ireland, Galway followed by a postgraduate Diploma in Accounting at the Michael Smurfit Business School while working with PriceWaterhouse Cooper. He completed his accountancy training in Dublin and is now a Fellow of Chartered Accountancy Ireland. After qualifying as an accountant in Dublin he returned to Galway and worked for KPMG as a tax manager.   He then returned to Higher Education as a mature student and completed a postgraduate Diploma in Education before commencing lecturing at GMIT. He lectured in Finance and then became the Acting Head of Department in the College of Tourism & Arts, Galway campus. During this period he completed a post graduate diploma in Hospitality Education while working full-time in GMIT.  Later he moved to Castlebar where he was appointed Head of Department of Business, Humanities and Technology. In this role he had responsibility for a variety of programmes including Business, Technology, History, Geography and Outdoor Education.

During his time in GMIT he has been involved in many working groups associated with quality assurance. He is a member of the GMIT Management Group and a member of the GMIT Academic Council.  He is currently Chairperson of the GMIT Retention Committee.
