GMIT Open Mornings (14 & 15 Oct) to feature interactive events, CAO talks, tours and clinics

A special seminar for parents, teachers and career counsellors on how to help pupils make correct third-level course choices will take place during this year’s GMIT Open Morning events which run at GMIT’s two Galway city campuses on Friday, 14 October and Saturday, 15 October (2016).

Author and education consultant Catherine O’Connor will deliver a free seminar called ‘Cracking the College Code’, in room 1041, Galway campus, from 10am to 11am on Friday, followed by a presentation on GMIT’s new and current programmes by GMIT Vice President for Academic Affairs and Registrar Michael Hannon and senior academics, which takes place in the same venue (room 1041) from 11.15am to 12.30pm.

Several hundred pupils from schools in the west and around Ireland are expected to attend the two Open Mornings which run from 9.30am to 1.30pm Friday and 10am to 12.30pm Saturday. Shuttle buses will operate between the Dublin Road and the Centre for Creative Arts and Media (CCAM) campuses on both days.

Students visiting the campuses can attend a range of information talks and a Learning Games Zone offering a Mocktail Demo, DIY Yourself Real or Photoshop, Spaghetti Structures, Create a Post card, Electronic Games & apps, and Laser Grid Show. In addition, students can book a one to one Career Clinic session with the GMIT Careers Office. This involves psychometric testing and feedback on course choices and pupils’ suitability for the programme.

An exhibition space in the New Foyer at the Dublin Road campus will provide information on courses in Mechanical & Industrial Engineering, Electronic & Electrical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Computing, Science, Business, Tourism, Heritage and Arts, Letterfrack courses - Furniture Design, Manufacture, Technology, Education; Castlebar - Nursing, Health Sciences, Business, Heritage, IT, Outdoor Education; and the Centre for Creative Arts & Media (CCAM) at Monivea Road, Galway city – Contemporary Art,  Design (Textiles, Fine Art, Print, Sculpture, Ceramics, Photograph) , Film & Documentary.

Dr Carina Ginty, GMIT Schools Liaison Officer, says: “We changed our format for open days in 2015 and it now includes an interactive learning games zone where students are challenged in the areas of Business, Science, Technology, Engineering and Design. In addition the exhibition space now includes industry guests, working alongside our teaching teams, sharing knowledge on course choices and career paths.  Together with the information talks and the one to one career advice clinics there is something for everyone to help students make the right CAO choices.”
