Increase in demand for business, design, engineering and science courses
Demand has increased for Engineering, Science, Design, and Business degree courses in GMIT this year (2017) compared to last, the 2017 CAO figures show.
The new Design courses in GMIT’s Centre for the Creative Arts and Media (CCAM) continue to be in high demand with the Institute making 50% more offers this year than in 2016.
Michael Hannon, GMIT Vice President for Academic Affairs and Registrar, says: “Overall, GMIT has made 10% more offers at honours degree level this year compared to last (2016). There is evidence of confidence returning to the construction sector with increased offers being made on all of our construction-related programmes in the School of Engineering including Mechanical Engineering."
“Two new Engineering programmes, the Bachelor of Engineering in Agricultural Engineering at GMIT’s Mountbellew campus and the Bachelor of Engineering in Biomedical Engineering at the Galway (Dublin Road) campus are responding to this increased demand.”
“Demand also remains strong for Science related programmes, despite the national trend, and also for Computing and Business programmes. The new Science specialisations in Sport & Exercise Science and Public Health Nutrition are addressing new markets for GMIT.”
“This year our specialist degrees in our School of Business - Finance, Marketing and Sales, Finance and Economics, and Business with Entrepreneurship, have also proved popular and show that students know what areas of Business they want to study in their first year.”
“The new grading system did not make any significant difference to the points per programme, which will come as a relief to this year’s Leaving Certificate students.” adds Mr Hannon.
Leaving Certificate students who meet the minimum entry requirements and did not get an offer are encouraged to review a number of GMIT programmes on the ‘Vacant Places’ section of the CAO website. This option has proved popular in previous years for many students and is open to prospective students from Tuesday 22 August, 2017. For more information see www.cao.ie or www.gmit.ie/cao
