Textiles, ceramics, sculpture, printmaking, photography and painting on show

Third year students on the new BA in Contemporary Art programme in GMIT are to showcase their work in an exciting public exhibition called Lasair in GMIT’s Dublin Road campus, opening on 15 March at 6pm. The exhibition will feature work from a wide range of disciplines such as textiles, ceramics, sculpture, printmaking, photography and painting.

“The title Lasair, meaning ‘spark’ in Irish, reflects the way that creative ideas are generated by the Irish and international students on the programme, and was chosen to coincide with the annual two-week Irish language Festival Seachtain na Gaeilge,” explains event co-ordinator/lecturer and practicing artist Deirdre O’Mahony.

The exhibition opening will be performed by Paul Fahy, Artistic Director of the Galway International Arts Festival. It takes place in the New Foyer space on the GMIT (Dublin Road) campus on 15 March at 6pm. This is open to the public and light refreshments will be supplied.

Opening Times:  Friday 16th, Tuesday 20th, Wednesday 21st and Thursday 22nn March from 11 – 5pm.

Deirdre O’Mahony adds: “This is a first step in the students’ professional lives, where their work is presented to the general public in an exhibition promoted, installed and managed by them as part of a module in Professional Practice in the new BACA programme. We are immensely proud of the way that they have taken on this challenge and look forward to seeing Lasair opened by GIAF Artistic Director Paul Fahy on 15 March”.

Dr Patrick Tobin, Head of the GMIT School of Design and Creative Arts, says: “This is our first public exhibition from students undertaking the new multi-disciplinary programme in Contemporary Art. It is a wonderful opportunity for people to view and appreciate the work of the students. It is also a credit to the staff who have embraced a new approach to teaching multi-disciplinary artists and preparing them for professional practice.”

Marc Craddock, a 2D student in the college, says: “It’s something many of us have never done before, so it’s a momentous occasion, being the first showing of our personal work in a public space. We couldn’t be more excited to be working on this project. As a group we invite you to attend Lasair and let us ignite your imagination.”
