Practice Placement in Medical Science 1.1
Description
The Practice Placement is a 1000-hour placement in which the learner will gain knowledge of the principles of ethical and professional behaviour for medical scientists together with practical experience in a clinical laboratory under the supervision of qualified medical scientists. The placement will allow exposure to state-of-the-art laboratory equipment and instrumentation while knowledge of the importance of clinical laboratory tests and the interpretation of results will be emphasised.

Practise safely and effectively within the practice boundaries of the profession.
Competently perform core laboratory techniques in the medical science disciplines under supervision.
Apply previously acquired theory and practical knowledge to the day to day work in a clinical laboratory.
Demonstrate an understanding of the collaborative skills required to practise effectively as a medical scientist.
Take responsibility for managing one’s workload and setting priorities.
Analyse and interpret laboratory results to assist in screening, diagnosis and disease management and be able to advice on further testing as appropriate.
Communicate effectively with staff and service users in a healthcare setting through written and oral means.
Comply with current Health and Safety regulations, and have knowledge of the relevant biological, chemical and physical hazard groups and associated risk containment in the clinical laboratory.
Demonstrate an understanding of and be able to apply the principles of quality assurance, quality improvement and quality management including risk management in the clinical laboratory.
Demonstrate an understanding of legal and ethical issues, including issues relating to consent, confidentiality and data protection that pertain to medical science.
Participate in reflective practice and demonstrate an understanding of the need for ongoing and continuing professional development.
Recognise personal responsibility and professional accountability for one’s actions and be able to justify professional decisions made.
Research and audit current practices in medical science with reference to ethical, professional and legal frameworks.
